MOCK TRIALS
In light of the budget situation this year, the traditional funding source for Mock Trials at Natomas High School has disappeared. In the past, it was funded by GATE funds, but these categorical funds have been moved into the Natomas Unified School District's General Fund to help alleviate defecits. We are trying to find an alternative source for the $550 registration fee.
The Mock Trial has proven to be an effective learning tool for secondary school students. It helps them develop useful knowledge about the law, questioning techniques, critical thinking and oral advocacy skills.
About Mock Trial & Moot Court
Mock Trial simulates a trial-level proceeding in which students portray the roles of pre-trial counsel, prosecuting and defense attoryneys, witnesses, court clerks, bailiffs, and jurors before a single presiding judge and two scoring judges.
Moot Court is an appellate level proceeding in which participating youth prepare and argue a topical case matter before a panel of three judges that evaluates the students on a quality and persuasiveness of their leval reasoning and presentation, as well as their unscripted responses to spontaneous questions from the bench.
The Gordon D. Schaber (GDS) Competition is a five county competition in moot court, mock trial, courtroom art & courtroom journalism. School teams and students compete for individual, county and competition titles. Over 200 legal professionals and judicial leaders volunteer annually to help educate youth about the courts, assess participants' skills and provide real-world perspectives on the rule of law.
GDS is a LawWorks Partnership of the Center for Youth Citizenship. LawWorks is a model law education partnership designed to connect teachers and legal professionals, expanding service to schools and local communities. Through its service, leadership, moot court, mock trial and youth court components, LawWorks provided youth with the opportunity to develop the academic and citizenship skills needed by our young citizens and future leaders.
Mock trials will also leave student participants with an appreciation of the difficulties that judges, lawyers and juries face in attempting to present all relevant facts and legal arguments and insure the just resolution of the issues involved.
Please help us find funding! For only $550, we can participate. I appreciate your hard work on our behalf and would be grateful for any assistance you could provide.
